A man has been ordered to pay his ‘secret’ partner £2,000 after attacking her in a drug-fuelled rage.
25-year-old Wasim Mehrban kept his partner shielded from his family and gradually became disrespectful and abusive towards her.
Bradford Crown Court heard how when he told him she no longer wanted to be ‘hidden,’ Mehrban, of Heidelberg Road, Bradford, threatened to kill her if she ever turned up at his house.
He later apologised for the threat and arranged an Airbnb property in Bradford where they could meet up.
Prosecutor Anthony Moore told the court how Mehrban had spent the night drinking and taking nitrous oxide, and when the woman tried to leave he became angry.
Mr Moore said: “The defendant stood in front of the door shouting and swearing and said she was only behaving that way because she was a woman.
“He then grabbed the complainant by the neck and threw her across the room into a television.”
Mr Moore explained how Mehrban had called the property caretaker and claimed that the woman was “trashing the place,” but he was then seen to punch and kick her before running off.
When he turned himself into police two days later, he claimed the woman had attacked him and caused the damage.
At a crown court hearing last month Mehrban, who had no previous convictions, finally admitted a charge of assaulting the complainant.
Barrister Rodney Ferm, for Mehrban, said his client was in work and had returned to live with his parents. “He’s terrified of the prospect of going to prison,” Mr Ferm told the court.
Judge Ahmed Nadim imposed a three-year community order, but Mehrban must also complete 50 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was also ordered to pay £2,000 compensation to his victim for her injuries and trauma, and £750 costs.
Judge Nadim expressed concern about how in his pre-sentence report Mehrban had tried to minimise the level of his guilt but instead tried to turn blame onto the victim and warned him of the consequences of committing any further offences.
The judge said: “Throughout these proceedings, and in the course of your behaviour against your victim, you’ve exhibited an attitude of misogyny and disrespect to your partner.
“Should you breach the expectations of this court you’ll be brought back before me. I’ll remember you, and I’ll suffer no hesitation in sending you to prison.”
