A man from Shipley has been jailed for 16 months after he pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.
Mikael Khan was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday 15 October.
Khan, 37, of Brookside Avenue, was caught on dash cam driving a BMW car carelessly in Leeds in June last year and the footage was sent to West Yorkshire Police’s Op Snap portal for further investigation.
Enquiries established the vehicle was insured to Khan and a Notice of Intended Prosecution was hand delivered to him.
Khan claimed to have sold the car before the incident, but officers could find no evidence of this and submitted what transpired to be forged documents in support of his claim, which resulted in the charge being brought against him.
Speaking after the sentencing, Rachel Wainwright, of West Yorkshire Police’s Casualty Prevention Unit, said: “This conviction demonstrates that we will prosecute those who drive carelessly on our roads, and I would like to thank the person who submitted the footage to Op Snap, which allowed us to open an investigation into the matter.
“Khan went to great lengths to try and avoid a fixed penalty for this incident, but it has only resulted in him receiving a prison sentence.
“Perverting the course of justice is a serious offence and I hope this outcome sends out a warning to anyone who thinks they can evade detection for offences committed on our roads.”
