Fancy some free sun flowers? Then head on down to Morrisons where they’ll be bringing a bit of summer to your shop with thousands of packs of free sunflower seeds.

In total they will be giving away 300,000 packs totaling 25 million sunflowers to all customers at checkouts. They say the move is an effort to boost the spirits of the nation as we finally emerge from lockdown.

Once you’ve finished your shopping, the seeds will be offered free of charge at the checkout. For those shopping online, a pack will also be included in your order. You can plant them at home and watch them blossom into dwarf sunflowers around 14 inches tall.

The idea is the brainchild of Peckham’s Community Champion Rose Morgan who came up with the idea to help people plant a brighter future after lockdown eased.

“Everyone is emerging from lockdown in different ways and I wanted to give my customers fresh hope and food for the heart by putting smiles on as many faces as possible,” she said. “I had the idea of using sunflower seeds to represent this new beginning and emailed David, our CEO, to tell him we’d be giving some away in our store in Peckham. I’m so happy he liked the idea and am very proud that it will now be taking place in all Morrison’s stores.”

In addition, Morrison’s Community Champions have also launched a ‘Little Sunshine’ award – to recognise those who have gone above and beyond in their local community throughout the pandemic. Across the country they will deliver ‘little sunshine’ certficates to hundreds of children who have been nominated for their efforts supporting the community through the pandemic.
