Number Forty in Skinnergate faces closure after supporting vulnerable people in the town centre for three years

The future of a Darlington welfare hub is in doubt due to a decline in visitors and concerns around funding.

Number Forty in Skinnergate faces closure after supporting vulnerable people in the town centre for three years.

The facility was set up by Darlington Borough Council and Durham Constabulary as part of the Safer Streets initiative, a nationwide drive to tackle violence against women.

It is open from 9pm to 2am on Friday and Saturday nights and is staffed by trained security staff and street paramedics to provide first aid and medical support to those who need it.

However, Home Office funding for the facility is due to expire in March 2026, with no alternative currently lined up.

Chris Knox, head of community safety at the council, said: “Funding is a big issue and we are looking for other partners to assist to continue Number Forty.

“It costs a lot of money to keep it open and there has been a real downturn in volunteers supporting it at night.”

Volunteers were praised for their “invaluable” medical support after helping thousands of people and improving safety for women and girls since opening in 2022.

Mr Knox added: “When it first started, I volunteered in there, and a lot of people came through the door after consuming too much alcohol, being spiked, or being physically or sexually assaulted. Now, we are getting very few people through the door other than to charge their phones and get flip-flops.

“The night-time economy isn’t quite what it was.”

Council leaders are due to consider the future of Number Forty following discussions with officials.

Mr Knox said: “The paper we are preparing will consider whether we keep Number Forty open or whether we offer a more ‘Street Friends’ alternative without using Number Forty, and looking for vulnerabilities in the night-time economy and supporting them.”
