Opportunity knocks: QED launches career scheme for young people in West Yorkshire

Sixty young people from ethnically diverse communities across West Yorkshire are being given a valuable head start in their careers, thanks to a free training programme designed to bridge the gap between education and employment.

The Opportunity Knocks initiative, delivered by Bradford-based charity QED Foundation and supported by the Morrisons Foundation, offers personalised training aimed at equipping recent graduates and students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

Participants receive one-to-one coaching, attend weekly workshops, and are mentored by professionals from the corporate sector. The programme focuses on essential areas such as CV and cover letter writing, interview preparation, developing professional networks, communication and teamwork skills, and navigating culturally diverse workplaces.

The aim is to support participants in finding employment or internships, securing promotions, launching their own businesses, or progressing to postgraduate education.

Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, founder and chief executive of QED Foundation, said the programme was inspired by the achievements and struggles of young people recognised in the charity’s annual Yorkshire Asian Young Achievers Awards.

“Every year I am amazed and humbled by the skill, creativity, determination and sheer hard work of the entrants in our awards,” said Dr Ali. “But I am also saddened that their successes have often been achieved against the odds. Young people from ethnic minority backgrounds are still much more likely to face disadvantages in the job market. For instance, they may need to send many more CVs than their white counterparts before securing an interview.

“Our courses are designed to level the playing field and ensure these talented individuals can access the opportunities they deserve.”

Research consistently highlights disparities in employment outcomes among ethnic minority groups in the UK, despite similar or higher levels of educational attainment. The Opportunity Knocks programme aims to address these challenges by helping young people to better understand their strengths and explore career paths that align with their interests, particularly in sectors often overlooked by minority groups.

Sarah Wilkinson, People Director at Morrisons, said the company was proud to support a project that aligns closely with its commitment to workplace inclusion.

“At Morrisons we are passionate about building an inclusive culture where everyone feels welcome and supported in developing their careers,” said Wilkinson. “We are delighted to work with QED Foundation to give young people from diverse backgrounds the chance to take that all-important first step into the workplace or progress in their careers.

“The Morrisons Foundation distributes over £2 million annually in grants to local charities, and this programme reflects our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential, regardless of age, gender, faith or ethnicity.”

Due to high demand, QED Foundation is now seeking additional sponsors to expand the programme and support up to 300 more young people over the next three years.
