Plan to expand “unusual” filling station shop unit is approved

An “unusual” filling station on the edge of Bradford city centre can be extended to add more retail and office space.

The small filling station on Hammerton Street has a shop building with just 12 square metres of space.

This summer, a planning application was submitted to expand this building, including the creation of a second storey.

The change would almost double the retail space in the building, as well as creating a second floor office.

The filling station site had belonged to Bradford Council, but was sold at auction earlier this year for £93,000.

The application by K Mahmood said: “The extension would add office space to the first floor and the ground floor would add retail associated with filling stations.”

It goes on to quote Chancellor Rachel Reeves and her call for faster growth in the UK economy, and said Bradford Council should support the expansion of this business.

Planning officers have now approved the application, saying: “It is acknowledged that the current building is unusual for a contemporary petrol station in providing such limited retail space, and the proposal would create a shop space more in keeping with modern trends.”
