Plan to replace garage destroyed by blaze in Bradford is refused

Plans to build a new garage on the site of a garage was demolished after a fierce fire last year has been refused.

The MJ Autos building on Bedford Street was badly damaged by a fire in February 2022. The damage was so severe the stone building was demolished shortly after the blaze.

In July a planning application was submitted by Mark Loughtman to build a new garage on the same site was submitted to Bradford Council.

The new building would be a purpose built garage, with more service bays, and constructed of more modern materials.

But planners have now refused the application, raising concerns about a lack of parking and the modern materials planned in construction.

Highways officers said: “The proposed plan shows four bays and there would be six staff.

“Therefore, the current proposal should provide 15 parking spaces.

“No parking is being provided.

“The proposed development site lies adjacent to a turning head at the end of Bedford Street and due to a lack of off-street parking provision the proposal would result in an increase in on-street parking and within the turning head affecting access.”

Referring to the building design, officers added: “The proposal would result in an unsympathetically large development of materials that would relate poorly to the setting of the adjacent buildings and would present an incongruous and dominant feature on a prominent location adjacent to the highway.
