Plans to turn section of bank into security deposit box business can go ahead

Part of a former town centre bank will be re-opened as a safety deposit box business.

The Barclays at the corner of Otley Road and Kirkgate in Shipley Town Centre shut in July 2021, with the company arguing most banking is now done online rather than in person.

Plans to turn the upper floor of the building into flats have since been approved, and now more detail of the plans for the ground floor have been revealed in an application to Bradford Council.

Abassi Property Ltd plans to divide the ground floor into two units, and one will be used as a safety deposit box business.

This use will take up half the ground floor and the building’s basement.

The future use of the second unit has not been decided yet.

The company applied to Bradford Council for confirmation as to whether these works need planning permission.

Planning officers said: “The proposed use falls under the same use class as the former bank use and therefore an intensification in the use of the building is not envisaged.

“This (security deposit) is an activity which occurred when the building previously operated as a bank.

“As both existing and proposed uses within the lower levels of this building fall under the same use class no material change of use will occur.”
