Shipley takeaway makes fresh bid to open until 1am amid “competitive” night-time economy

A Market Street takeaway in Shipley has once again applied to extend its opening hours until 1am, arguing that longer trading is vital for survival in the town’s growing late-night economy.

A Shipley take away has made another bid to open into the early hours of the morning due to the town’s “very competitive” evening economy.

In 2014 Bradford Council granted planning permission for a new take away unit and flats on Market Street, next to the town’s Costa.

One of the conditions is that the take away would have to shut at 11pm each night.

The unit is currently operating as a branch of Rajas.

In recent years there have been two planning applications calling for later openings. Both have been refused due to the impact of people living in neighbouring flats.

Now another application has been submitted seeking permission to open until 1pm for a 12-month period. It says this will give the business enough time to prove the later opening will not cause any concerns for neighbours.

The application says: “The local evening economy is very competitive and in current cost-of-living economic times the function of the business requires greater flexibility on its hours of operation for the premises to remain viable.

“The peak time for customers is naturally earlier in the evening when food is ordered around the traditional evening mealtimes.

“However, to take advantage of and contribute towards the night-time economy the premises needs to be able to be able to serve customers who may have returned home late and need/choose to have food delivered. The existing restrictions results in lost custom forcing customers to rely on other food providers.”

A decision on the application is expected in December.
