Targeting uninsured drivers across West Yorkshire

Police in West Yorkshire will be targeting uninsured drivers over the coming weeks with the aim of making our roads safer for all.

Roads Policing Officers working alongside local district officers are heading out to locations across the county over the summer months as part of a joint initiative with the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB).

Data shows a clear link between uninsured drivers and further offences – from motoring offences to wider criminal activity including theft and drugs-related crime.

By focusing on the danger posed by uninsured drivers, it is hoped that officers will not only remove the threat they pose to other road users, but also disrupt wider criminality and anti-social behaviour in our local communities.

Uninsured vehicles will be seized and action taken against the people driving them.

Chief Inspector James Farrar, head of West Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Working with MIB will allow us to dedicate additional time and resources and focus our efforts on the dangers posed by those people who are irresponsible enough to take to our roads in a vehicle without insurance.

“This will allow us to have a targeted approach to identifying and removing uninsured vehicles from roads across the county.

“We will be focusing on areas with the highest levels of uninsured driving throughout West Yorkshire in order to maximise our impact, whilst using learning from other forces who are also collaborating with MIB on Operation Scalis.”

West Yorkshire Police is working with partners as part of Vision Zero with the aim to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

It uses the Safe System approach which has five pillars of action: safe road users and behaviours, safe speeds, safe roads, safe vehicles and post-collision response.
