Tributes flood in for the second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing

It’s been two years since Queen Elizabeth II passed away after 70 years as Monarch of the United Kingdom, reigning from 1952-2022. Her Majesty passed away age 96 on 8 September 2022 in Balmoral, Scotland, where she spent every summer and was well known to be her favourite home.

Tributes flooded in from across the world, with people releasing their favourite pictures, videos, and memories of the late Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles and Queen Camilla spent Sunday morning at a church service in Crathie Kirk near Balmoral. The royal family paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II two years after her passing by posting a picture of in a matching pastel pink outfit with a beaming smile. They wrote “Remembering Queen Elizabeth II 1926-2022”.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer also paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II as he released a statement via social media saying “Today marks two years since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The late Queen’s dedication to the UK and Commonwealth taught us that whatever challenges our country faces, the value of service always endures. For the 70 glorious years of her reign, she was at the heart of this nation’s life. Today we honour her memory.”

Additionally, the previous Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took to X, formerly known as Twitter to also pay his respects. He stated “Our thoughts are with His Majesty King Charles III and the whole Royal Family today, two years since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. I continue to treasure my memories of the occasions when I met Her Late Majesty. People across the UK – whether they had the good fortune to meet Her Late Majesty or not – will be reflecting today on what she meant to them and the example she set for us all. The scale of her service to this country will never be forgotten”.

Members of the public flooded the internet to share their most treasured memories. One of these included a humorous interaction between a photographer and the late Queen. This involved the photographer suggesting that her Majesty remove her crown to make it ‘less dressy’ for the image they wanted to achieve.

The Queen responded with ‘less dressy what do you think this is’, pointing to the cloak and detailed embellished aspects of her extravagant outfit. Many see this as showing the Queen’s quick wit and the personable side to an untouchable figure such as the head of state.

Further stories of adoration from the public include her cutting a cake in 2022 to celebrate her 70-year reign. People commented on social media stating, ‘It captures her sense of humour’. As the cake was placed upside down for the press the Queen laughed and joked with the people around her saying “it’s for them and I don’t matter”. Once again, the public seemed to engage with videos of the Queen more when she was captured being funny and warm, as these are the videos that went viral.

Many videos resurfaced yesterday to commemorate the anniversary of her death and fill people with pride in the memory of the Queen they once shared.

One of the most popularly circulated videos online involves the Queen and Prince Phillip at the celebrations of the Queens 90th birthday in 2016, held in the grounds of Windsor castle.

The Queen exclaims ‘Cows!’ as she points and fills with glee whilst turning to her husband Prince Phillip. He gives her an adoring look and seems to make some sort of joke. The internet was fixated on this clip as people stated ‘we will never forget how excited the Queen was to see cows’, and ‘she was a mother, a grandmother, great grandmother, and our monarch… but perhaps my favourite of all, she loved cows. RIP your majesty”.

These examples show the mass of people who supported and paid their respects to Queen Elizabeth II. People paid tribute to her dedication and work, through her sharing specific points of joy that were captured, as they thanked her for her service as our monarch.
