Wider curriculum, residential trips and cultural diversity: What made this Bradford school get an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating twice in a row.

Carlton Bolling, a school based at Undercliffe Lane, Bradford, has managed to get an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted twice in a row.

The report, published on 16 June 2023, observes, “Behaviour in the school is exemplary. Pupils are respectful of each other. The relationships between adults and pupils are incredibly warm. Pupils feel cared for and would not hesitate to speak to teachers with any concerns.”

The inspection by Ofsted, done in May 2023, noted, “A charity fundraising event, organised and run by pupils, was ongoing during the inspection. Pupils were eager to tell inspectors about the success of this work and the aims of the project. A highly effective and rich reading programme ensures that pupils read regularly. This programme is used to develop strong cultural knowledge in pupils.”

Despite being in one of Bradford’s deprived areas, the Carlton Bolling school has managed to clutch its Outstanding rating, twice in a row. The earlier one coming in 2017.

Head of school Mohammed Azum

Head of school Mohammed Azum said: “The outstanding Ofsted rating has inspired everybody in school by providing a strong sense of achievement and validation for the continued hard work and commitment to education we provide to our students. It is a sense of pride and achievement and serves as a reminder of the importance of hard work and dedication in the pursuit of excellence.”

Speaking on what his school does differently, he said: “In the school, we acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of our diverse student body by organizing cultural events, festivals, and activities that promote cultural awareness, understanding, and respect.”

“We have created safe and supportive spaces for students from different backgrounds to come together, share their experiences, and learn from each other,” he adds.

Assistant Headteacher Lindsay Wilson

Assistant headteacher, Lindsay Wilson, said: “Offering wider curriculum activities such as residential trips, external motivational speakers, and competitions can provide students with valuable learning experiences that complement their academic studies. These activities help students develop a range of skills, such as teamwork, leadership, communication, problem-solving, and resilience.

Residential trips, for example, have helped students develop independence, self-confidence, and social skills by providing opportunities to explore new environments, engage in outdoor activities, and develop friendships with peers. External motivational speakers inspire and motivate students by sharing their personal experiences and insights and providing guidance on how to achieve their goals.”
