A woman who drove a hired Lamborghini at speeds of up to 143mph before crashing on the M62, killing a 20-year-old Bradford man, has been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.
Humaira Batool, 26, from the Bankfoot area of Bradford, was convicted following a trial at Leeds Crown Court over the death of Mohammed Shaan Hussain.
The court heard Batool had taken a turn at driving the hired Lamborghini Urus during the early hours of 21 December, 2022.
During the journey, she reached speeds of up to 143mph, more than twice the motorway speed limit.
At around 4.20am, while travelling westbound between junctions 22 and 23 of the M62, the Lamborghini went out of control in wet conditions.
The vehicle struck a barrier before flipping over and catching fire.
Emergency services attended the scene and found Batool, who had suffered serious leg injuries.
Mr Hussain was recovered from the vehicle having suffered fatal injuries. He was just 20 years old.
West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Batool was subsequently arrested and, in January 2024, charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Following a trial, a jury today found her guilty.
Detective Inspector Paul Conroy, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “We welcome the verdict of the jury in today finding Batool guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.
“We always maintained she was responsible for her own actions in choosing to drive the car to speeds up to double the speed limit, and she must now answer for the incredibly dangerous driving she demonstrated on that night.
“We now await her sentencing on 2 November.”
Batool will return to Leeds Crown Court on 2 November to be sentenced.
