Huddersfield Town have confirmed that manager Lee Grant has been sacked six months into his reign, following their 3-1 away defeat against Burton Albion. The Terriers have won only 3 of their last 12 EFL League One matches and currently sit sixth in the table.
Although the side are currently in the play-offs, they are level on points with Luton Town, who are eighth. The Hatters are below the Yorkshire club in the table due to a worse goal difference by three.
Lee Grant was appointed as the club’s first-team manager in May 2025, ahead of the 25/26 season. The retired goalkeeper was assistant manager at Ipswich Town for three seasons, seeing the club gain promotion to the Premier League, before being relegated the season after.
His three-year stint at Portman Road was brought to an end as he stepped into management at Huddersfield Town.
Despite Grant penning a three-year deal, his contract was terminated after six months, despite the side being in the play-offs.
He took charge of 38 matches this season, winning 17, drawing six and losing 13. In the league, the Terriers have won 11 and lost 10 of their 27 fixtures played. Their points-per-match ratio is currently 1.44. The last 20 league matches see the Yorkshire club sit 17th in the form guide, picking up only 24 points from 20 matches. Out of all the teams in the top 11 of League One, no side has lost more than Huddersfield to date this campaign (10 defeats).
In the FA Cup, Huddersfield’s hopes of a cup run were brought to an end in the first round, as fellow League One side Bolton Wanderers won 1-0 against them.
Matches do not get easier either for Town, who take on Yorkshire rivals Bradford City in their next match. Bradford are chasing down a spot in the top two in the third-tier, sitting three points behind Lincoln City.
A weekend match against the Bantams is followed by a midweek clash against Luton Town, who are currently breathing down the neck of Huddersfield Town. With one game being played before Luton travel to the Accu Stadium, the match could prove to be a six-pointer at kick-off.
Huddersfield Town’s owner and chairman, Kevin Nagle, said: “Sadly, on current form, none of those objectives [set at the start of the season] are being met, and with just under half of the season remaining we feel no other option but to make a change to put the side back on track.
The club’s Sporting Director, Chris Markham, will lead the process of appointing a replacement for Lee Grant. With a week until Town’s next match, they will hope to bring somebody in who can use the week to transfer their tactical ideas to the players, before a big game next weekend at home. Back-to-back home matches will help the Terriers fans get behind their team and new manager, as they look to progress up the league table as quickly as possible.
With two difficult upcoming league clashes, the momentum from wins from those matches could be crucial, as the second half of the season gets underway.
Huddersfield Town will be hoping to gain promotion this season to the Championship, where they last played during the 2023/24 season. Last campaign, the side finished 10th in the league, but that was a disappointing season following their relegation from the second tier.
After heavy investment in the summer, the current league position of seventh is lower than where they are expected to be, considering there were 14 transfers completed in the summer. Already in January, the Terriers completed the signing of Bali Mumba from Plymouth Argyle for a fee in the region of £1 million.
