Labour MP blames party leadership after election lossess

An MP has blamed the Labour Party leadership after seats were lost in the city council elections.

Richard Burgon, east Leeds Labour MP, said Keir Starmer should set a “timetable to go” following the vote.

He said: “I think candidates would not have lost if it wasn’t for the mistakes and positions taken by Keir Starmer.

“He should accept that he ‘s not going to be leading us into the next election.”

Mr Burgon said there was a risk of the country being run by a “Trump-style” government without a change of direction by Labour.

He said: “He should set a timetable to go.”

As final votes were counted at the city’s John Charles centre, Labour fell below the 50 seats needed for overall control.

The party would still be the biggest on the council with the most elected members.

That means Labour could seek to form a minority adminstration.

Another option would be a coalition formed between parties with a mandate to run the council.

Negotiations will be held between parties before future arrangements are announced at a 20 May annual council meeting.

Notes: Recount being held for two Morley seats but not expected to affect the outcome for Labour.
