Tributes have been pouring in for a well-known restaurant owner who spent four decades serving generations of customers and helping shape the local dining scene.
Shabbir Ahmed Laher, affectionately known as Sammy, founder of Samarkand Restaurant in Heckmondwike, passed away peacefully at home on 4 June surrounded by his family.
Widely regarded as one of the pioneering figures of the local South Asian restaurant trade, Sammy entered the industry in the 1980s and went on to establish Samarkand Restaurant, which became a much-loved fixture in the community.
In a statement, his family announced his passing and paid tribute to his lasting legacy.
They said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shabbir Ahmed Laher, affectionately known as Sammy, founder of Samarkand Restaurant, Heckmondwike.
“Sammy passed away peacefully at home on 4th June 2026 surrounded by his family.
“For 40 years, he welcomed generations of customers with kindness, warmth, and hospitality, making Samarkand a cherished part of the community.
“We are grateful for the love and support shown to our family at this difficult time.”
Following the announcement, hundreds of customers, friends and members of the wider community shared heartfelt messages online, remembering Sammy not only for his food but for the personal connections he built over the years.
Many described him as a “lovely man”, recalling how he greeted customers by name and always took time to speak with families who visited the restaurant.
Others reflected on special occasions celebrated at Samarkand, from family meals and birthdays to anniversaries and community gatherings, saying Sammy’s welcoming nature helped create memories that would last a lifetime.
