England 4 Croatia 2: Kane double and Bellingham brilliance launch Three Lions’ World Cup charge

England announced themselves as genuine contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening Group L clash in Dallas.

In a match packed with drama, goals and attacking flair, captain Harry Kane struck twice before second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford secured all three points for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

England made the perfect start when Kane converted from the penalty spot after Noni Madueke was brought down in the area. Croatia, however, refused to be overawed and responded through Martin Baturina to level the scores.

The Three Lions regained the lead when Kane rose highest to power home a header, drawing level with Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup finals goals for England. Yet Croatia once again found a response, with Petar Musa ensuring the sides went into the break level at 2-2.

While England’s attacking play impressed throughout the opening period, questions remained about their defensive organisation after twice allowing Croatia back into the contest.

Whatever was said in the England dressing room at half-time had the desired effect.

Just minutes after the restart, Jude Bellingham produced a moment of quality that underlined why he is regarded as one of the world’s finest young players. The midfielder drove forward before finishing superbly to restore England’s advantage and shift the momentum firmly in the Three Lions’ favour.

From that point England dominated proceedings.

Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic prevented the scoreline from becoming far more emphatic, producing a string of outstanding saves to frustrate England’s attackers. The Croatian shot-stopper was arguably his side’s best performer despite conceding four times.

England continued to create chances and finally put the game beyond doubt when substitute Marcus Rashford finished clinically late on to cap an impressive second-half display.

The victory places England at the top end of Group L and gives Tuchel’s men early control of their World Cup destiny. It also extends optimism that this talented squad could finally end the nation’s long wait for major tournament success.

There will, however, be areas for improvement. England looked vulnerable defensively at times and stronger opposition may punish similar lapses later in the tournament. Nevertheless, their attacking quality was evident throughout, with Kane, Bellingham and Rashford all making decisive contributions.

What it means for England

The win gives England three points from their opening Group L fixture and puts them in a strong position to progress to the knockout stages. With Ghana and Panama still to come, Tuchel’s side know another positive result could all but secure qualification.

Who do England play next?

England’s next match is against Ghana in Boston on 23 June, before completing the group stage against Panama on 27 June.

If England continue their winning form and top Group L, they will be well placed heading into the knockout rounds and could begin to dream of a first World Cup triumph since 1966.
