For every generation, certain films hold a special place in their hearts, becoming woven into the fabric of family life and cultural identity. Among these, Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 masterpiece, Sholay, stands out as an ideal Bollywood classic.
This autumn, that iconic film is set to make a remarkable leap from the dusty plains of Ramgarh to the elegant tiers of Kensington, as it holds its ground-breaking ‘Films in Concert‘ world premiere at the esteemed Royal Albert Hall on 10 October.
This is no ordinary screening; it promises to be the ultimate live experience. As audiences settle in, they will be treated to the thrilling escapades of small-time crooks Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra), displayed on a massive HD screen, with Hindi and English subtitles ensuring everyone can share in the excitement.
But the true magic unfolds in the orchestra pit. The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, under the skilful direction of conductor Melvin Tay, will perform R.D. Burman’s iconic, adrenaline-fueled score live, synchronised perfectly to the film.
From the unforgettable harmonica theme to the exhilarating rhythms of one of cinema’s greatest train heists, this orchestration promises to breathe new life into Pancham Da’s legendary work.
For cinephiles, there’s an extra reason to secure tickets early. This event will feature “Sholay: The Final Cut“, a stunningly restored 4K version of the classic.
Notably, this version restores footage that was famously removed by the Indian censor board back in 1975, revealing a glimpse of the director’s original vision that has long been hidden from audiences.
Shehzad Sippy of Sippy Films expressed his enthusiasm about this collaboration with the event producers, Esk, stating, “We are truly excited to partner with Esk to bring Sholay to audiences in this novel format. The screening will feature the recently restored 4K version of the film with its original cut that was banned by the Indian censor board in 1975.”
As the Royal Albert Hall becomes a noteworthy venue for South Asian pop culture milestones, it follows last year’s triumphant RRR in Concert screening.
Now, Sholay joins an elite lineup of Films in Concert that includes Hollywood favourites like Casino Royale, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and La La Land.
Matt Todd, the Director of Programming at the Royal Albert Hall, expressed his excitement about the occasion: “Sholay is an undisputed Bollywood classic paired with an impeccable score, so to host its ‘Films in Concert’ world premiere here at the Hall is incredibly thrilling.”
For the British Asian community, this event represents a beautiful full-circle moment, allowing those who experienced Sholay in local cinemas during its original release in the ’70s to share the uncensored, transcendent magic of Gabbar Singh, Basanti, and India’s greatest bromance with a younger generation.
Anticipation is high, and tickets are expected to sell out quickly. Keep a close watch on the Royal Albert Hall box office to ensure your place in this extraordinary cinematic experience.
