Closed Middlesbrough pub could reopen as shisha venue under new plans

A former Middlesbrough pub could be given a new lease of life after plans were submitted to convert the building into a shisha lounge and bar.

The Red Lion, located at the southern end of Linthorpe Road, has been closed since September 2024, according to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). If approved by Middlesbrough Council, the vacant premises would be transformed into a venue featuring indoor customer seating, designated shisha smoking areas, hot and cold drinks, light refreshments and lounge spaces.

Planning documents submitted by Loxton Design state that bringing the building back into use would help support the vitality of the Linthorpe Road commercial area.

The application proposes retaining the majority of the building’s existing layout, with only minor internal alterations planned. Customer and staff facilities would be provided, including toilets and staff accommodation.

The design statement argues that the proposed use is compatible with the character of the surrounding area and would contribute to the local evening economy. Documents submitted to the council also suggest the development would not create significant additional parking demand compared with the building’s previous use as a pub.

The application notes that the site benefits from its location on a major transport corridor served by frequent bus routes.

Plans indicate that one section of the premises would be removed from the proposed venue, with existing openings blocked off to create a smaller operational space.

The neighbouring Coral bookmakers unit at the southern end of the building is not included in the application.

Council planners will now consider the proposal before a decision is made.
