Bradford to celebrate Armed Forces Week with multi-faith service

Bradford Council will live stream the multi-faith service for those who want to attend virtually

Bradford Council will celebrate Armed Forces Week 21 June to 27 June.

Armed Forces Week is a chance for people to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans, reservists and cadets.

Throughout the week videos will be shown on Bradford Council’s YouTube and social media channels which fit within the Armed Forces Week theme.

To mark the end of Armed Forces Week and Armed Forces Day there will be a multi-faith service of remembrance on Saturday, 26 June. The service will include elements of the annual Drumhead Service and the Bradford Pals’ service.

The service will be held at Bradford Cathedral however due to the recent announcement in the delay of the lifting of lockdown restrictions it will be invited guests only. The service will be live-streamed on the Bradford Cathedral YouTube channel from 11 am on Saturday, 26 June for people who want to pay their respects.

City Hall Clock Tower and other buildings in the city centre will be lit up in red, white and blue from Monday, 21 June until Sunday, 27 June in honour of all our armed forces personnel.

Usually, the Council holds a special lunch at City Hall for veterans and invited guests, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic this has been cancelled and will not take place this year.

Councillor Joanne Dodds, Bradford Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “Bradford district is rightly proud of its strong relationship with our Armed Forces and although events will still be different this year due to restrictions, we will still be able to demonstrate our thanks for all that they do for us.

“We can still show our continued support and appreciation for all those men and women, from across all our communities, who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans, reservists and cadets.”

Leader of Bradford Council, Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, said: “Although this year will still be different to previous years we are determined that we show our support and appreciation for our Armed Forces.”

Bradford Council’s Chief Executive, Kersten England, said: “Our Armed Forces have supported us all and in the past year and have worked hard in the Bradford District in response to the Coronavirus pandemic helping communities to deliver food parcels and assisting with logistical planning, testing and vaccine rollout, this week as always we support and say thank you to them.”
