Cooper v Phillips: Leeds United’s inside battle as England take on Scotland

Club captain Liam Cooper will come up against his Leeds counterpart Kalvin Phillips as their two sides clash at the Euros

England will face Scotland at 8pm tonight in their Group D game at Wembley Stadium, a fixture that will see usual team mates Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper, pitted against each other.

Not only huge bragging rights on the line in the match between these two old rivals, but the result is all important for both teams chances of qualifying for the knockout stages.

A win for England would guarantee their place in the next round, thanks to an impressive win over Croatia in their opening fixture.

The Three Lions earned a hard thought result over 2018’s World Cup runners up, with Phillips integral to the gritty win.

Not only did the 25-year-old prevent Croatia from having any attacking joy, the midfielder set up attacker Raheem Sterling for the only goal of the game with a bustling run past two defenders, before sliding in a perfectly weighted pass to Sterling to finish.

Scotland on the other hand didn’t enjoy their opener as much. A 2-0 loss to Czech Republic, thanks to a Patrick Schick double left the Scots pointless after round 1. Schick towered above centre back’s Grant Hanley and Liam Cooper to head in the opener before half time. Not long after the second half had started, Schick add to his tally with a magnificent strike from near the halfway line which left goalkeeper David Marshall tangled in his own net.

This leaves Scotland needing points from today’s match to increase their chances of qualifying, especially with Croatia and Czech Republic playing each other beforehand.

Their last win against the Auld Enemy came in 1999 but the Scots lost the next three in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

However, the Tartan Army will take hope from the fact the last meeting between the two sides ended in a 2-2 draw. The goals coming from Leigh Griffiths in the 87th and 90th minute on that day.

If they have any chance of getting a result, Scotland will need Kalvin Phillips not to carry on his good form and club mate Cooper has had no hesitation in letting the Wortley born midfielder know.

Speaking on BBC One’s coverage of the Netherlands versus Austria, Phillips shared what the defender text him about the upcoming match between England and Scotland.

Phillips said: “Liam text me after the game [against Croatia], actually. He said, ‘Kalvin, you’re a joke and I hope you don’t play that well on Friday’.”

In May, Cooper also said to the Glasgow Times: “I told him, first chance I get in a game I going to come straight up the back of him,

“If he gets the chance I am sure he will do the same to me as well.

“Kalvin knows exactly what I think of him,

“I remember him as a lad and I have seen his development over his full career. He was a young boy when I finally got to Leeds and to see him improve as a player to the point where he is now, is all credit to himself. He is unbelievable. But, as I say, that goes out the window when we play England.

“I am here representing Scotland, I want to win, I want to make my family up in Scotland proud and the nation proud. I am professional, I am honest and I want to cause an upset. You could say, we want to do a number on them. But my main worry is Scotland. We worry about ourselves, we don’t worry about what’s going on over there. We’ll be ready.”

England vs Scotland will kick off at 8pm and will be shown live on ITV.
