Batley has officially submitted its bid to become UK Town of Culture 2028, putting the town forward on a national stage.
The bid is led by BatleyHub, co-founded by Akhtar Kasia and Isabel Townend, owner of Heeleys in Batley, with Kirklees Council acting as Accountable Body.
Built around the theme “Made Here”, the proposal highlights Batley as a town shaped by its people, businesses and community networks. From its textile roots to its independent high street, the bid focuses on what Batley continues to produce today.
Plans include a town-wide textile installation created by local residents and groups, alongside activity across the high street where creative work will be made and shared in public spaces.
Akhtar Kasia said: “Batley has always been a town that builds and organises. This bid is about showing that strength on a bigger stage.”
Isabel Townend added: “This is about bringing people together and making visible what Batley already does so well.”
The bid focuses on participation across neighbourhoods, with opportunities for young people, local businesses and community groups to take part.
If successful, the programme aims to leave a lasting impact through stronger local networks and greater confidence in the town.
