Prime minister Boris Johnson will hold a Downing Street press conference at 5pm today alongside chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and NHS director Dr Nikki Kana.
The announcement comes as data released on Wednesday showed that Omicron is now the dominant Covid-19 variant in London and is spreading rapidly across the UK.
Data published by UKSHA has shown that there is one confirmed case of the Omicron variant in Bradford, with three confirmed cases in both Leeds and Sheffield, and one in Rotherham and East Riding.
At the same time, Levelling Up, Housing and Communities minister Michael Gove will be chairing an emergency Cobra meeting with the devolved administrations at 5:15pm.
This announcement comes at a time where Mr Johnson is facing heat for allegations of Christmas parties and staff dos held during Level 3 restrictions in London last Decemeber.
The first leaked picture of a ‘raucous’ Christmas party held at the Conservatives Westminster HQ last year in breach of lockdown rules was released yesterday.
The image shows 24 people, mostly Tory aides, crowded together in a room, breaching both lockdown and social distancing rules.
It is not expected that the prime minister will announce any more Covid-19 restrictions.
