Chaiiwala introduces high-protein summer menu across UK stores

For years, local councils across the UK have grappled with a familiar dilemma. Fast food outlets have frequently faced planning restrictions over concerns that an oversupply of takeaways contributes to rising obesity and diabetes, particularly among young people.

Against that backdrop, restaurant chains have increasingly come under pressure to rethink what they offer. Rather than relying solely on indulgent menu items, many are now introducing lighter alternatives aimed at health-conscious customers.

Indian street food chain Chaiiwala has become the latest to do so, which has launched a limited-edition summer menu centred on lighter, protein-rich meals while retaining the Indian-inspired flavours that have become synonymous with the brand.

The new range includes Chicken Tikka Salad and Kebab Caesar Salad, both made using proteins already found on Chaiiwala’s menu alongside fresh ingredients such as lettuce, guacamole, sweetcorn and red cabbage slaw.

The chain has also introduced two avocado toast options. Egg Burji Avo Toast combines avocado with desi-style scrambled eggs, while Butter Chicken Avo Toast offers a lighter version of one of the company’s most popular dishes. According to Chaiiwala, each of the new food items contains fewer than 400 calories.

The summer menu also includes two seasonal drinks. A Badam Milk-Shake has been created using almond ice cream, pistachio and saffron, while a Desi Cold Coffee blends Karak coffee with vanilla ice cream to offer a chilled alternative during the warmer months.

The launch reflects changing consumer habits across the hospitality industry, where restaurants and cafés are expanding healthier ranges to meet growing demand for meals that are lower in calories but still filling.

Sohail Ali, co-founder of Chaiiwala, said customers increasingly wanted more balanced options without compromising on flavour. “Our new limited-edition summer menu brings together lower-calorie, higher-protein options with the bold Indian-inspired flavours our customers already know and love,” he said.

The move also demonstrates how businesses traditionally associated with indulgent takeaway food are adapting as conversations around nutrition continue to shape consumer expectations.

Founded in Leicester in 2015, Chaiiwala has grown into one of the UK’s largest Indian street food cafĂ© brands, operating more than 100 locations nationwide alongside stores in Canada and Dubai.

As planning restrictions, public health campaigns and changing customer preferences continue to reshape Britain’s food landscape, the question for many brands is no longer whether healthier options should be offered, but how they can be introduced without losing the flavours that built their reputation in the first place.
