The owner of the award-winning business Delhi 6 is to open a new Indian tapas restaurant on South Tyneside.
Shah Lalon Amin and his staff have been celebrating being named Best Asian Restaurant in the North-East at the national Asian Curry Awards. And now they feel the time is right to capitalise on their popularity in the town.
Shah explained: “We’ve been wanting to expand, and this site is perfect because we wanted a place where people can sit downstairs in the bar and go upstairs to a restaurant.
“Delhi 6 has its own uniqueness and this site will have its own uniqueness too, it’s a beautiful old building and we’ll be keeping that feel to it.
“We’re so happy with people’s response so far, it’s a very exciting time for us. We would like to thank all our lovely customers for their many visits to Delhi 6 over the past year.
“It is a pleasure to see many familiar faces coming through our doors and numerous new faces giving us a try too.”
Speaking about the menu at the new site, he said: “Customers have said for a while that they like Indian tapas as it means they get to try lots of different flavours. There will definitely be plenty to choose from and we’ve been doing lots of research.
“We’ve ran Indian tapas menus at the original Delhi 6 and they’ve always been popular so we knew the demand was there.
We pride ourselves on our customer service and it’s something we’ll be carrying on into the new business. There’s certainly plenty of interest around a tapas restaurant and it’s an exciting challenge. We really can’t wait to get started.”
Since he posted details of the scheme online the response has been amazing with great support coming from across the area and beyond.
The project will see the emergence of the town’s, first dedicated Indian tapas restaurant on the site of the former Barr Porter bar in Dean Road.
As Asian Standard previously reported Delhi 6 was run on the premises his father used to create a successful restaurant. And it seems the good work is set to carry on into 2022.
Work will begin on the tapas bar in the next few weeks with a view to a big opening in either February or March.
Delhi 6 Rooms will offer the delicious food Shah has become famous for upstairs while the ground-floor lounge will present a colourful range of Prosecco, gins and cocktails.
Shah added: “We hope to welcome customers both old and new to Delhi 6 Rooms but for now of course Delhi 6 on Ocean Road will continue to provide a quality service.”
