October is Black History Month in the UK and it has been celebrated nationwide every year for nearly 40 years.

Each year, Black History Month is celebrated in Kirklees but due to the coronavirus outbreak, many of this year’s events will be held virtually.

There is an event booklet with the details of virtual events that have been organised by community groups and individuals, local organisations, and Kirklees Council.

Virtual events:

Shakespeare and Race

Black Inventors

Global Black History

Windrush: Untold Stories

‘Hear our Story’ Podcast

These are just a few examples of the fantastic virtual events taking place in Black History Month 2020.

Black History Month

Councillor Shabir Pandor, Leader of Kirklees Council, said: “I am so proud to see how Kirklees residents, community groups, organisations and the council have adapted to these unique times to make sure that Black History Month is celebrated this October.”

“The coronavirus outbreak may have halted our ability to host physical events but that hasn’t stopped the people of Kirklees from organising a timetable of virtual events which celebrate black history and provide us all with the opportunity to learn.”

Pandor said, “This year’s theme of Black History Month is ‘Women in Achievement’. From politics to sport, performing arts to science, from fellow councillors to colleagues, we should celebrate the achievements of black females who continue to inspire and excel.

“Their stories of resilience in the face of discrimination deserve to be highlighted and subsequently should be used as a catalyst for change that educates and inspires present and future generations.”

As the leader of the council Pandor will continue to work hard tackling all forms of racism, discrimination, and inequalities.

“Please stay safe and enjoy celebrating Black History Month 2020.”

Their biggest strength in Kirklees is diversity and they will try to celebrate this at every opportunity.
