Khabib 2.0? Islam Makhachev faces biggest challenge against Dan Hooker this Saturday

The MMA community were all silent when all eyes were on Khabib Nurmagomedov after defeating Justin Gaethje in what many never knew would be Khabib’s last MMA fight. After defeating Justin, Khabib placed his gloves on the floor which symbolises a fighter’s retirement and said due to his father passing away and his mother urging him to not continue to fight this would be his last fight.

Fans were left in tears after Khabib explained his journey to becoming the UFC lightweight champion stemmed down from his father always wanting him [Khabib] to become a world champion.

Many fans were saddened to see Khabib retire as Khabib walked out the octogen for the last time. As stacked as the lightweight division was, everyone knew nobody would ever become on the same level as Khabib. His pure dominance in the lightweight division quickly labelled him as the greatest MMA fighter. However, coming up the ladder was Islam Machachev. Islam, a fighter from the same village as Khabib and related to Khabib has been on a dominant winning streak and was set to square-off in to octogen against Rafael Dos Anjos. Rafael, the former lightweight champion was scheduled to face Islam this Saturday but after sustaining an injury had to pull out the fight.

According to many fans, Islam is the most feared fighter in the lightweight division and someone as a fan favourite to becoming the lightweight champion soon. Dan Hooker is on the mission to stop the hype train of Islam and prove he has what it takes to beat Islam. Dan recently lost his last fight against Michael Chandler, the former Bellator lightweight champion who transitioned to the UFC and beat Dan.

Despite his KO loss to Chandler, Dan took to social media in wanting to become the first replacement for when Rafael was not cleared by medical doctors to fight. Dan has also expressed on his Twitter how he would like to fight more than the scheduled bout of 3 rounds but 5 rounds to show he is better than Islam.

This will be Islam’s biggest challenge to date as Dan is within the top 10 rankings of the lightweight division.

Fans are hopeful Islam will beat Dan but anything can happen once the bell goes off this Saturday night in Abu-Dhabi!
