Kim Leadbeater MP welcomes Fairfield School pupils to Westminster

Students and from Fairfield School in Heckmondwike were welcomed to the House of Commons by their MP, Kim Leadbeater. On what was a very special day out, the pupils and their teachers had a tour of Parliament and even caught sight of the Prime Minister on his way to answer MPs’ questions.

It was the first time the school, which supports children with a wide range of complex needs, had organised a day trip to London.

Husnain, Hamza and Prosper were welcomed by Kim Leadbeater who presented them with souvenir pens. As well as looking around the historic buildings, they travelled in a London black cab, saw Big Ben and the London Eye and even found time to visit the Harry Potter shop on Platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross Station.

Their teacher, Hazra Jogiyat, said: “Taking learners some of whom have had this lifelong dream to visit London, but thought it not possible because of being in the wheelchair, has been a most fulfilling and wonderful adventure, one that they will never forget. They had an amazing time there. Thank you to Kim and her team for being at the Palace of Westminster to welcome us at her place of work and giving our pupils the opportunity to learn about Parliament and Democracy.”

Kim Leadbeater MP said: “It was a great pleasure to meet the students and share in their excitement at having such a special day out. I know it took a huge amount of planning by the staff at Fairfield and I want to pay tribute to them and my own staff for making it all work so well. It was a really memorable occasion for me, as I’m sure it was for them and I’m just very happy we were able to make it happen.”
