Nunthorpe Community Centre are hoping for longer opening hours

A green-lit community centre in the south of Middlesbrough is hoping to extend its opening hours.

Nunthorpe Community Centre, which is set to be completed in early 2026, wants to operate with more wide-ranging opening hours than what was proposed in the original application form. It is hoped that, if approved, the change to timings will see the centre better used by local residents as well as enabling greater accessibility.

Middlesbrough Council has registered the request, following the council planning committee’s unanimous approval, given back in July, meaning that the long-awaited community centre could be built. At a meeting held later in the same month, it was agreed that the Labour Executive would approve the proposed terms of a 25-year lease agreement with a consortium led by Nunthorpe Parish Council for the management of the facility.

The “non-material amendment”, as it is described on the council’s planning portal, aims to change the proposed opening hours (as submitted in the original application form) from 10.30am to 2.30pm and 7pm to 9pm to longer hours which would see the facility able to operate from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week.

The application form explained the reason for the amended timings, saying: “Change to allow the centre to be used by a wider range of groups and members of the public and making it more accessible to a larger community area. This will in turn make a better use of the proposed building in this area for local residents.”

The request now sits with a council planning officer.
