Odsal stadium played host to community members and business owners for their first Eid celebration at the stadium on Saturday 16 July.
While Bradford Bulls took on London Broncos, guests tucked into a delicious banquet of food, consisting of a selection of curries, rice and cake by Regal Foods.
Attendees included Imam Mohammed Qari Asim MBE, Col Andy Black, Iqbal Bhana OBE, DL, BEAP CEO Humayun Islam BEM, Editor of Asian Standard Fatima Patel, Dr Manoj Joshi, DL MBE, Nirmal Singh, MBE, CEO of Click ITC Nasar Hussain, solicitor and Director of law firm Switalskis Razia Jogi, Faisel Ali of Regal Foods, Sid Amin of La Romantica Beds and Erfan Aslam of Global Components
The event also saw Dr Ikram Butt, founder of BARA a not-for-profit organisation and the first British Asian to play rugby for England, receive a lifetime achievement award in recognition to rugby league, community and charitable causes by Nigel Wood OBE, Chair of Bradford Bulls and Ralph Rimmer, CEO of Rugby Football and Iqbal Bhana OBE, DL.
Former rugby player Junaid Malik was also honoured with a very special award in
recognition for his outstanding contribution to amateur rugby league and charitable causes
Mr Malik had initially graduated in law and started working in the legal profession but soon caught the bug for playing rugby and now lives and breathes rugby league.
Bulls Chairman Nigel Wood said: “We are delighted to be hosting an Eid celebration here at the stadium and welcome Dr Ikram Butt, Humayun Islam and members of the Muslim community to Odsal Stadium following the Eid Al Ahda celebrations.
“The Bradford Bulls are fully committed to using sport to bring different communities together and this Eid celebration at Odsal Stadium is just the start as we continue with our aims of becoming a force for civic pride and good in the city.”
Dr Ikram Butt, who helped facilitate described the celebrations as being “truly amazing, iconic and really surreal” He went on to coin the occasion as a “triple header” by Bradford Bulls
“You can’t get any better than a BARA vs Bulls Select, curtain raiser to the Bulls vs Broncos game followed by hosting an Eid extravaganza, the first of its kind by any rugby club across both codes in the northern hemisphere.” Dr Butt explained
“I have to say a massive thank you to Nigel Wood OBE, Tracey Erby, Shaun Flynn for going out of the way in making this happen, all the guests in attendance who made the event more special with particular attention to the main instigator of such a memorable occasion, Humayun Islam BEM.” He added.
Humayun Islam BEM agreed with Ikram. He said: “It was a fabulous day celebrating Eid Al Adha at Bradford Bulls, Odsal Stadium.
“It was a ground-breaking event and the first of its kind at a Rugby club in the UK! Credit has to be given to Nigel Wood OBE and his team for putting this on.”
Humayun went on to congratulate Junaid Malik for his special recognition award and to Dr Ikram Butt for receiving his life time achievement award, which he felt was fitting to receive at the iconic Odsal Stadium.
