Residents increasingly frustrated as council ‘fails to collect bins for weeks’

The council says this is because the street is blocked by vehicles, but residents are adamant this is not the case

A street in Moldgreen has seen no bin collections for over two weeks, and residents are growing increasingly frustrated, struggling to get a response from Kirklees Council.

Some living on Knowle Avenue say their bins have not been collected since 8 May, making this the third week without a collection. The bin related issues date back further with rubbish reportedly being collected on Tuesdays rather than Mondays as they would ordinarily.

Residents have spoken out. Andrew Holroyd said: “I’ve personally contacted the council and put in a comment and have received no response.

“Yesterday I put in a complaint because I’m sick of it. It’s a health and safety issue and a fire risk.”

Mr Holroyd also explained that despite being wider than the adjacent streets, Knowle Avenue is the one that is being missed out by the lorries.

Jessica Clarke said: “It’s really hard work, there’s five of us in here, one in nappies. I’ve had the grey bins for three weeks now without collections. It’s ridiculous.”

Another resident added: “It’s been getting worse and worse. It’s not ideal when you pay your council tax.”

The Local Democracy Reporting Service contacted Kirklees Council and asked whether the bins will be re-collected and if residents can expect any compensation. We also asked whether the recent instances of missed bin collections are representative of the state of Kirklees’ refuse collection services.

In response, Cllr Naheed Mather, Cabinet Member for Environment said: “The team are aware of issues with collections on Knowle Avenue, Moldgreen due to recurrently parked cars and vans on Birkhouse Lane and Lister Street preventing wagons swinging or reversing in.

“Obstructions from parked cars are isolated incidents, and where this can be a recurring issue, residents have been kindly asked to park more considerately on the collection days but unfortunately this doesn’t always happen.

“The teams will continue to make every effort to collect bins that are presented and we ask that residents park considerately on their day/s of collection. The council does not have a compensation policy in respect of missed bin collections resulting from restricted access.”
