Sophia Naqvi has announced her bid to become the first MP for the West Ham and Beckton constituency

An independent councillor in Newham has announced her bid to become the next MP for West Ham and Beckton.

An independent councillor in Newham has announced her bid to become the first MP for the new West Ham and Beckton constituency. Sophia Naqvi of the Newham Independents is currently a councillor for Plaistow North ward after she won a local by-election in November 2023.

Newham Independents announced on X on 4 May that Cllr Naqvi is their parliamentary candidate for the West Ham and Beckton constituency. The independent group wrote on X: “We are pleased to announce Sophia Naqvi as the Newham Independents parliamentary candidate for the West Ham and Beckton constituency.”

Cllr Naqvi told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “As a Newham resident, I’m very proud of my borough. It’s where I live and the place where I’ve raised my family and I’ve spent most of my life in the borough. I meet with and speak to so many locals, whether it’s out shopping or walking in the park, maybe even grabbing a sandwich at the local café. I care deeply about my area and it’s the reason why I stood and successfully won the election in Plaistow North last November and became a local councillor.”

Cllr Naqvi went on to say that her campaign will be ‘people powered’ and over the next few months is looking forward to the challenge. She had been a member of the Labour Party but quit in October 2023 in response to comments made by Labour leader, Keir Starmer about the Israel-Hamas war.

The West Ham seat has been held by Lyn Brown from the Labour Party since 2005, but is set to become West Ham and Beckton due to a shake-up in constituency boundaries. Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is yet to reveal a date for the general election, which he can call from any time now up until December 17, 2024. The latest the election can take place is on 28 January 2025. It’s unclear if Cllr Naqvi would give up her role on the council if she is successful in being elected an MP.
