Fierce Competition from Across the Nation

The tournament drew participation from schools across various regions, including London, Cumbria, Wales, Saint Helens, Hull, and Liverpool. The SBSJ girls faced formidable opponents, demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience. Their ability to stay focused and work cohesively as a team was evident throughout the competition, culminating in their well-deserved triumph.

Community Lions Foundation: A Catalyst for Success

The Community Lions Foundation has played a pivotal role in the team’s success. In partnership with St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic College, the foundation has been nurturing rugby talent among Year 7 students. Over the past two years, the foundation has developed rugby teams for Year 7, Year 8, and Year 10. Remarkably, 99% of these students had no prior rugby experience during their primary school years. The foundation’s efforts to introduce rugby league to these students upon entering secondary school have proven transformative.

Rising Stars on the National Stage

Despite their tender age, with most players being just 11 to 12 years old, the Year 7 girls showcased exceptional teamwork, both in attack and defence. Their relentless effort and commitment propelled them to the finals, where they will face a strong team from Wales. This decisive showdown is scheduled for 5 July  at the Wakefield Trinity ground, where a victory would crown them as the best rugby team in the country.

A Triumph for the Community

The triumph of the SBSJ girls’ rugby team is not just a victory for their school but also a testament to the burgeoning talent in girls’ rugby and the impactful role of community programs in sports development. As the team prepares for the finals, the entire school and local community are rallying behind them, hopeful for another stellar performance that could see them lift the national trophy.

This success story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of fostering young talent and the power of teamwork and perseverance in achieving excellence. The Year 7 girls’ rugby team from St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic College stands as a shining example of what can be achieved with dedication and support.
