The holy month of Ramadan for Muslims across the world has begun as moon is sighted

The holy month of Ramadan has officially begun after the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia, marking the start of a sacred period of fasting, prayer and reflection for Muslims worldwide.

Many Muslims across the UK and beyond will observe their first fast on 18 February 2026. Fasting hours this year are shorter than in 2025, with fasts beginning at approximately 5.30am and ending around 5.30pm.

Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, meaning its start date shifts each year. The fast runs daily from dawn until sunset, during which Muslims abstain from food and drink, including water, as well as focusing on spiritual discipline, charity and community.

The month lasts for either 29 or 30 days, concluding when the next crescent moon is sighted to mark the festival of Eid al-Fitr.

Beyond fasting, Ramadan is a time of heightened prayer, generosity and family gatherings, with many breaking their fast at sunset with dates and water before sharing an evening meal known as iftar.

How colleagues and friends can support those observing Ramadan

For workplaces, schools and communities, small gestures can make a meaningful difference. Here are some ways to show support:

  • Be mindful of energy levels
Fasting can be physically demanding, particularly in the late afternoon. Scheduling demanding meetings earlier in the day can help.
  • Avoid unnecessary food pressure
Not everyone fasting will want to explain why they are not eating or drinking. Respect their space.
  • Adjust social plans thoughtfully
Consider arranging gatherings after sunset so fasting friends can participate fully.
  • Offer flexible working where possible
Earlier start and finish times may help those observing additional late-night prayers.
  • Learn and ask respectfully
Ramadan is about more than abstaining from food. Taking time to understand its spiritual significance can foster inclusivity.
