Weekend Sports Round-up: Swansea City 1-0 Huddersfield Town

Sports reporter Ryan Murray has all the highlights from the weekend’s football.

Neil Warnock bemoaned a raft of missed first-half opportunities, as Huddersfield Town sunk to a 1-0 defeat against mid-table Swansea City. The Terriers travelled to South Wales in positive spirits, having picked up eleven points in their previous five Championship fixtures. Indeed, the 74-year-old’s arrival has pre-empted a resurgence in form, as Town look to conclude a desperate campaign outside the relegation places.

Huddersfield’s counter-attacking approach has served them well in recent weeks, but the away side’s poor finishing undermined the effectiveness of their tactical set-up; only one of their nine attempts was directed on target. An action-packed first-half saw both sides come close to breaking the deadlock; Town’s Polish international defender Michał Helik glanced wide from six yards after Tom Lees dangerously squared Jack Rudoni’s corner across goal, before the hosts hit a post via the head of Ben Cabango. Jaheim Headley then arguably wasted the West Yorkshiremen’s best chance of the 90 minutes, firing his volley over Andy Fisher’s goal despite finding himself completely unmarked in the penalty area.

Russel Martin’s men dominated possession from kick-off and had Huddersfield against the ropes for extended spells, but it took almost 70 minutes for the Swans to breach a resolute away defence. A cruelly deflected effort from Ryan Manning – who was a persistent threat all afternoon – looped past a helpless Tomáš Vacík, who could do little to prevent conceding his side’s 60th goal of the season.

Town sit one point clear of the relegation zone with just four games remaining, and now prepare for an intimidating trip to the Stadium of Light, desperate to grab some kind of result against play-off chasing Sunderland. Although events did not unfold as planned at the Liberty Stadium, there was welcome news for Town fans from numerous other Championship grounds, as seven of the bottom eight clubs recorded defeats on Saturday afternoon. The only outfit to emerge with three points were managerless Blackpool, who overcame fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic at Bloomfield Road.

The Terriers have an eleven-day break after their visit to the north-east; on their return, they will once again meet Welsh opposition, this time facing Cardiff City – who are currently in 21st position – in a crunch relegation battle. By that stage in proceedings, three points might be an essential requirement for Warnock’s side.
