Bradford Council urges residents to sign up for direct debit for council tax rebate

Bradford Council is urging residents to sign up for direct debit to speed up the £150 Council Tax rebate payment next month.

Bradford Council is urging residents to sign up for direct debit to speed up the £150 Council Tax rebate payment next month.

Last month, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the Government will ease the burden of the rise in the energy price cap by providing support to the majority of people in England.

On average, households can expect an increase of around £700 in their gas and electricity bills from 1 April.

To counter this, Mr Sunak announced that households will receive a £200 per household loan to energy firms to make the initial bills lower and a £150 Council Tax rebate for households in Council Tax bands A-D.

The majority of people in Bradford will benefit from the council tax rebate, with more than 89.5% of homes in the district in bands A-D.

However, it still means around 23,000 households will miss out on the Council Tax rebate or one in 10 families.

If you live in the Bradford district, the payment will be made by Bradford Council and will not need to be repaid.

Households do not need to sign up for direct debit to receive the payment, but it may speed up the process of receiving the funds.

For those who do not want to sign up for direct debit, the council will be in contact to collect bank details to deposit the money which may take longer to process.

A council spokesperson said: “In order for us to make the payments as quickly as possible, we are encouraging residents to sign up for direct debit so that the payment can be made directly into their bank accounts.

“For those who do not pay their Council Tax by direct debit, we will need to contact them to collect bank details and this may take longer to process.”

If you do not currently pay by Direct Debit, it’s quick and easy to set this up online at www.bradford.gov.uk/directdebit.
