A Greek restaurant in Woodlesford has been granted permission to serve alcohol after councillors approved a premises licence despite objections from nearby residents.
Leeds City Council’s licensing sub-committee ruled that street food outlet Yiros, on Aberford Road, can serve alcohol until 9pm following a hearing on 29 July.
Two objections had been submitted, raising concerns over potential noise, litter and increased traffic congestion in the area. One resident also argued that another licensed premises was unnecessary, pointing out there is a pub directly opposite the restaurant and a Co-op store selling alcohol just 50 metres away.
Representing the business, licensing consultant Marta Ndreu told the hearing the restaurant would remain food-led rather than becoming a drinking venue. “The proposed hours are modest, with alcohol sales ending at 9pm,” she said.
“These hours reflect the nature of the business as a food-led restaurant, rather than a drinking establishment. Customers will be encouraged to leave the premises quietly and respectfully.”
None of the objectors attended the hearing.
One written objection stated that granting another licence for on-site alcohol consumption would add to the cumulative impact of licensed premises in the area.
The licensing sub-committee unanimously approved the application, subject to conditions agreed with Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police.
The decision means the restaurant can now serve alcoholic drinks alongside its food offering during its permitted trading hours.
