Former Bradford District Commander Osman Khan takes top role at West Yorkshire Police

The former West Yorkshire Police district commander for Bradford Osman Khan makes history as the first South Asian in a top force role since 2014.

The former District Commander for Bradford has made history by taking a position as Assistant Chief Constable in West Yorkshire Police’s Chief Officer Team.

Mr Khan is believed to be the first person of a South Asian background to hold a top job in the Chief Officer Team since Jawaid Akhtar, who retired as Deputy Chief Constable in 2014.

Serving in the force for more than two decades, Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) Osman Khan now heads up the Local Policing and Safeguarding portfolio.

the former District Commander for Bradford Osman Khan is now working in the top Chief Team office at West Yorkshire Police.

Joining him in the Chief Office team are two other new assistant chiefs. ACC Tyron Joyce holds the portfolio for specialist Crime and Criminal Justice, and ACC Scott Bisset is ACC for the National Police Air Service (NPAS).

An AAC is the third-highest rank in all British police forces, except for the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police. An AAC is directly responsible for leading and commanding the operational policing responses within their area of duty.

Mr Khan is responsible for overseeing the Local Police and Safeguarding portfolio which means he oversees setting the vision and direction of West Yorkshire’s local police and safeguarding policies.

ACC Khan joined the Chief Officer Team in May 2020, as Temporary Assistant Chief Constable overseeing the Specialist Crime Portfolio, including the Regional Organised Crime Unit, Counter Terrorism Policing and Regional Scientific Support.

Mr Khan initially joined WYP in 2000, serving across Bradford for ten years in various roles.

He then moved to the then North East Leeds Division as Detective Inspector, before being promoted to Detective Chief Inspector and Deputy Head of Professional Standards in late 2011.

Following a spell in Kirklees District, he returned to Professional Standards on promotion to Detective Chief Superintendent, before taking over as District Commander in Bradford in early 2019.

ACC Khan said, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my West Yorkshire Policing career to date and am delighted to take up my new role.”

Mr Khan is also a Strategic Firearms Commander, Public Order Commander and Multi-Agency Gold Incident Commander.

ACC Khan has worked in the role, alongside ACC Joyce and ACC Bisset since 24 January.
