One of Britain’s most influential modern politicians is returning to where his public life first took shape.
David Blunkett will deliver the 2026 Harold Wilson Lecture at the University of Huddersfield, revisiting the legacy of the Huddersfield-born Prime Minister while drawing sharp parallels with today’s political challenges.
The former Home Secretary will speak on Thursday 26 March at 6.30pm in the University’s Oastler Building. His lecture, titled From the General Strike to the Age of AI: Harold Wilson and Labour’s Enduring Challenge, promises to examine the changing face of British politics, from the industrial unrest of 1926 to the rise of artificial intelligence.
The theme is framed by two major anniversaries: Labour’s 1966 General Election victory under Harold Wilson and the centenary of the 1926 General Strike. Lord Blunkett is expected to explore how Wilson balanced political idealism with economic reality, navigating Treasury resistance, global pressures and institutional reform during a decade of profound social change.
Drawing comparisons between Wilson’s “white heat” of technological revolution and the AI-driven transformation of the 21st century, Lord Blunkett will reflect on leadership, public service and Labour’s continuing struggle to align economic policy with social justice.
The event marks something of a homecoming. Lord Blunkett studied for a teaching qualification at Huddersfield in the 1970s and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University in 2017.
Professor Tim Thornton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said the invitation comes at a pivotal moment in national life.
“Lord Blunkett joins a distinguished list of Harold Wilson Lecturers drawn from politics, the church and public life,” he said. “At a particularly significant point in the country’s political development, it is a privilege to welcome him back to campus to reflect on Harold Wilson’s leadership and the lessons it holds for the future.”
Born blind due to a rare genetic condition, Lord Blunkett rose from local politics to national prominence. He was elected Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside in 1987 and held the seat for 28 years. Following Labour’s landslide victory in 1997, he became a central figure in Tony Blair’s Cabinet, serving as Secretary of State for Education and Employment and later as Home Secretary.
After stepping down from the Commons in 2015, he was awarded a life peerage, becoming Lord Blunkett of Brightside and Hillsborough, and now sits in the House of Lords.
The annual lecture series honours Harold Wilson, the Huddersfield-born Prime Minister who won four General Elections and spent nearly eight years in Downing Street.
The event is free to attend, with tickets available via Eventbrite and is expected to draw strong interest from students, academics and political observers alike.
