Mayor of Kirklees makes urgent appeal as ‘symbol of town’s identity’ is stolen

The Mayor of Kirklees has issued a public appeal for the return of the historic Dewsbury mayoral chain following its theft from Dewsbury Town Hall.

West Yorkshire Police are investigating the burglary which took place at around 8.15pm on Sunday, 1 February. The chains, which sat in a cabinet in the town hall, were reported missing at 6.28am on Monday (2 February).

The stolen chain dates back to 1897 and is of significant civic and historical importance. Crafted from gold and featuring intricate medallions, rock crystal detailing and enamelled heraldic symbols, the chain represents over a century of Dewsbury’s history and civic life.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Liz Smaje, said: “The Dewsbury mayoral chain is not just a ceremonial object, it is a powerful symbol of the town’s identity, history and civic pride. It has been worn in service of the community for generations, and its loss will be felt deeply by residents who value Dewsbury’s heritage.

“I am appealing directly to anyone who may have information, or who may come into contact with the chain, to help ensure it is returned safely. This is a piece of Dewsbury’s story, and it belongs to the town and its people. We are working closely with West Yorkshire Police and remain hopeful that this important local treasure can be recovered.”

Police are appealing to anyone who saw suspicious activity on or around the roof of Dewsbury Town Hall from around 8pm on Sunday evening, or who has any information about the theft. Information can be provided via 101 or online, quoting crime reference number 13260064393, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
