Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez known and considered as the best fighter in the world is set to make his cruiserweight debut against Junior Makabu. The Mexican superstar is one of the biggest attractions and this was seen in his recent fight against Caleb Plant who came up short against the P4P king Canelo Alvarez.
What came to a shock was seeing how Canelo, instead of fighting others in the division has made it clear he would like to jump all the way up to cruiserweight to become the only Mexican fighter ever to become a 5-division world champion. Canelo has also admitted he doesn’t rule out the proposition of moving even higher to the heavyweight division.
If Canelo does do the unthinkable of beating the Makabu and moves up to heavyweight, then this would be one of the greatest accomplishments in boxing history. No other fighter has ever moved up weight that much and Canelo could be THAT fighter.
Canelo has fought pretty much every single person in his career, and this has shown how fans love seeing him fight. He fights anyone and everyone even if it maybe a dangerous fight where other fighters would not take the risk.
To think someone like Canelo is wanting to move up to cruiserweight is a success itself coming from his earlier days of fighting at super-welterweight. But fans do believe that despite his fights against everyone he seems to be dodging fighters such as the Charlo brothers who are champions within their own division.
In a recent press conference after Canelo beat Billy-Joe Saunders Canelo came eye-to-eye in front of another fighter known as Demetrius Andrade who believed he was next to fight the champion. The heated confrontation ended with Canelo telling Andrade to leave his press conference.
Fighters like Andrade, Charlo, Benevidez and Beterbiev are all wanting a crack at Canelo to become the second person to defeat Alvarez. The only fighter to have beaten Canelo is the former P4P champion considered the best boxer of this era – Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Mayweather made easy work of Canelo in their contest back in 2013 on the young Canelo. But in a recent interview Canelo admitted things would be different if Mayweather had fought him in his prime shape, he believes he is in now.
Fast forward from his defeat to Mayweather, Canelo is ready to take the fight against Makabu in cruiserweight which is likely to happen next year as the WBC has agreed to allow both competitors fight.
Canelo could be setting himself against a very dangerous opponent or could reap the reward of taking the WBC belt from Makabu. Only time will tell on where we go from here, but it seems the fight will happen in May 2022. A month which Canelo normally fights in.
If Canelo does win, then we could potentially see him going into the heavyweight division and fighting fan favourite names such as Joshua, Fury, Usyk and Wilder.
