South Shields Indian Restaurant Named Region’s Best

A South Tyneside Indian Restaurant is enjoying being named best in the North-East as the region continues to pick up national food accolades.

Delhi 6 in South Shield’s famous Ocean Road received the award at a prestigious event in London before Christmas. The restaurant came up against some of the best restaurants in the region fighting off some stern competition.

The Asian curry awards, launched in 2010 were designed to recognise the best in the industry involving both the Asian Catering Federation and the Federation of Bangladeshi Caterers UK, representing 35,000 UK restaurants and takeaways.

Delhi 6 owner Shah Lalon Amin explained: “At Grosvenor House in a room full of MPs, Ministers, Lords, Mayors and the elite of our industry, and a distinguished judging panel, we were honoured with this award.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank our passionate team, you guys are brilliant! And of course, our loyal customers who nominated us, championed us!! Thank you and thank you again! Our values are always of excellence, and to keep taking the customer experience further.”

What made the award even more coveted was the fact the homely restaurant opened just three years ago. In fact, Shah took over the premises his father used for an Indian restaurant more than 30 years ago.

Back in 2019 Delhi 6 was named Best New Restaurant, and the business made if to the final of a Channel 5 TV show called Catering Circle.

So what’s the secret to winning such an award? “You need to put yourself in the customers shoes,” Sha added. “Once you’ve got that then you realise how important it is to provide the very best in customer service. In fact, it really should become second nature. The challenge now is keeping those standards high. It’s great to see the region boasting so many food service awards as it’s good for the business generally.”

Like so many restaurant owners across the region Sha and his staff offered free meals to self- isolating elderly residents during the first critical lockdown They remain very popular in the community.

He added: “Our menu is street food inspired, bursting with impeccable flavours. We have the top chefs in the North-East who share our same passion. We are on a mission to give each diner an amazing experience when they dine at our restaurant.

“We serve street food classics such as Pani Puri, Bhel Puri and Vada Pow and our own signature appetisers such as Dynamite Prawns.

“I am absolutely delighted and honoured to know that Delhi 6 won the coveted Best Asian Restaurant North-East England Award. It’s been a lovely way to end the year.”
