Workshop launched to help parents tackle risks of social media use among young people

With platforms such as TikTok now embedded in the daily lives of millions of young people, a new community initiative in Bradford is aiming to equip parents with the tools to keep their children safe online.

Oasis Community Space Lister Park will host two dedicated workshops titled ‘Keeping Your Child Safe Online’, designed to support parents in navigating the challenges of social media and digital wellbeing.

TikTok alone boasts more than 1.6 billion active users worldwide, making it one of the most influential platforms among teenagers. However, alongside its popularity, concerns continue to grow around issues such as online pressure, harmful content and exposure to risky behaviours.

The sessions, delivered in partnership with Media Smart and TikTok, will offer practical advice and everyday strategies to help parents guide their children towards healthier online habits, even if they are not regular social media users themselves.

Ralph Berry, Community Lead at Oasis Academy, said the workshops were developed in direct response to concerns raised by young people.

“This is a really big issue,” he told Asian Standard. “We recently ran a series of health-focused videography sessions with Talk Your Walk CIC, working with Year 7 and 8 pupils. They spoke very openly about the pressures they face online, and the risks associated with platforms like TikTok.

“One of the issues they highlighted was the promotion of vaping and how easily they are exposed to it.”

Mr Berry said the feedback made clear that more support was needed, not just for young people, but for parents.

“We’ve agreed to take action locally, starting with these workshops as part of a pilot initiative. They are aimed at parents and carers and are a vital first step in building awareness and confidence.

“An outright ban on social media, even if introduced, would still leave gaps. Effective safeguarding comes from education and awareness, making sure all parents, especially those in high-pressure or economically disadvantaged communities, have access to the right support.”

The workshops will take place on Wednesday, 22 April, with two sessions available from 1.00pm to 2.30pm and 5.00pm to 6.30pm. They will be held at the Oasis Community Space, located at the rear of Oasis Academy Lister Park, with parking available on site.

Organisers say the sessions are open not only to parents of pupils at the school, but to any adult with a caring responsibility for children.

As concerns around children’s online safety continue to grow, initiatives such as this aim to bridge the gap between fast-moving digital platforms and the families trying to keep up with them.

Places can be secured via an online booking form or by contacting the community space directly via email
