Another Reform UK councillor leaves Kirklees group

Another Kirklees Reform UK councillor has left the group and will stand as an Independent.

Cllr Susan Maxfield, who represents Liversedge and Gomersal, has resigned the Reform UK whip and will now sit as an Independent councillor on Kirklees Council. The announcement was made by Reform UK group leader Councillor Sarah Wood on July 3.

Cllr Maxfield was elected to the council during May’s all-out local elections, securing more than 2,000 votes in the Liversedge and Gomersal ward.

In a statement, Sarah Wood said Reform UK remained focused on delivering for residents despite the departure. She said: “I can confirm that Cllr Susan Maxfield has resigned the Reform UK whip and will now sit as an Independent councillor on Kirklees Council.

“Reform UK was elected by residents to provide strong, effective leadership for Kirklees. Our priority remains unchanged, and the Group remains focused on delivering better services, restoring sound financial management and standing up for the communities we represent.

“We remain committed to working constructively with councillors from across the chamber wherever it is in the best interests of the people of Kirklees.”

The move comes just days after Almondbury Reform UK cllr Craig Wiles stepped down from his position, citing health reasons.

Cllr Maxfield has been approached for comment regarding her decision to leave the party group. Her departure further reduces Reform UK’s numbers on Kirklees Council following the party’s breakthrough performance in May’s local elections.
